Knock on the hood before driving: a vital rule in the cold season

With the onset of cold weather and the first frosts, many drivers have become accustomed to checking their cars’ batteries, tires, and fluids. But another critical detail should not be forgotten.

Police strongly recommend that drivers knock on the hood before getting behind the wheel. This simple rule can prevent serious trouble.

In winter, stray cats and dogs often seek warmth and comfort, and the engine compartment of a car can become an ideal shelter for them after a short trip. If the car owner does not check for animals inside, this can lead to their injury or even death.

Such situations happen every year. Andriy, a mechanic from the Kyiv car service, said that he often faces the consequences when animals get under the hood: “A cat can catch a belt or wires. Then drivers wonder why there is a smell of burning and the fan does not work.”

To avoid tragedy, the police strongly advise a simple method: knock on the hood or door of the car before starting. This sound will scare the animals, forcing them to leave their shelter. Additionally, you can briefly press the horn or go around the car.

It is also recommended to check the space under the hood, wheel arches, exhaust pipe, and the bottom of the car, as these are places homeless animals often use to rest. Although this check may seem insignificant, a few minutes of attention can save the lives of homeless people.

Animal rights activist Kateryna reminded that cats do not climb under cars just like that – they are looking for warmth and protection. Therefore, a small show of attention and care from people is the least that can be done for animals.

The habit of knocking on the hood is not just a funny movement or a sign. It is a way to express humanity and care for small creatures.
