Suspicious package found at US military base in Maryland, prompting evacuation

A suspicious package was delivered to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, USA, on Thursday. After opening it, several people felt unwell and were hospitalized, CNN reports.

According to the base, the building where the incident occurred, as well as a nearby facility, was evacuated, and the area was cordoned off. First responders found no threat and turned the case over to the Office of Special Investigations. The investigation is ongoing.

The package contained an unknown white substance. Several victims were taken to Malcolm Grove Medical Center on the base, sources said. Initial HAZMAT testing did not reveal any hazardous materials, but the investigation is ongoing. The HAZMAT team left the scene on Thursday evening.

The condition of those who came into contact with the package is currently unknown. The room where the envelope was opened at the Air National Guard Readiness Center remains closed.

Additionally, investigators are analyzing political content that was also in the package, the sources said.

Joint Base Andrews is a central hub for high-ranking U.S. officials, including the president, vice president, and cabinet members. President Donald Trump visited the base on Wednesday.

The Air National Guard Readiness Center provides a link between the National Guard Directorate and air units in each state.
