To improve her financial situation, she accepts plastic surgeon Evan Barlow’s offer to perform a complex operation for a client in Russia. This deal immerses her in the world of Russian oligarchs, particularly billionaire Oleg Ragoravich, one of the wealthiest people in the country.

The “Los Angeles Times” review characterized the novel as a striking look at the luxury and secrets of the Moscow elite. However, the plot’s connection to Russia during the war has sparked outrage among online users, especially from Ukraine.

Social media comments indicate that many people find the story inappropriate and provocative, suggesting that the focus on “normalizing” Russia feels like celebrating or ignoring a global conflict. Against the backdrop of Russian aggression, instances of support for such content have been seen as a display of indifference to the tragedies being experienced by the Ukrainian people.
