State Bureau of Investigation detained a prosecutor of Chernihiv region for receiving a bribe of $2,500

Law enforcement agencies documented receiving 2,500 US dollars from a prosecutor who, according to the investigation, demanded the amount to avoid liability for illegal logging.

Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation and the Security Service of Ukraine detained a prosecutor at the district prosecutor’s office in the Chernihiv region while receiving an illegal benefit, the State Bureau of Investigation said.

According to the investigation, the official demanded 2.5 thousand US dollars from one of the citizens. For this money, he allegedly promised to close the criminal proceedings and help avoid liability for illegal logging in the area of one of the settlements.

Currently, an indictment is being prepared against the suspect under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – receiving an illegal benefit by an official, in combination with extortion.

The prosecution also plans to file a petition with the court for the selection of a preventive measure.

This article carries a possible penalty of up to 10 years in prison and the confiscation of property.

Investigative actions are ongoing, law enforcement officers are identifying possible accomplices in this scheme.

The Prosecutor General’s Office manages the procedural aspects of the case.
