5 tricks from experts to help you avoid buying sour tangerines in the store
The tangerine season has begun in Ukraine, and bright orange fruits have appeared on store shelves, becoming a symbol of winter holidays and home comfort.
However, not always when you open a fruit package are you greeted with sweets. Sometimes you can come across sour or over-dried tangerines. How to choose delicious ones? Experts reveal some valuable tips.
Country of origin: the first indicator of quality
It is no secret that tangerines arrive in our stores from warm countries, and this, as a rule, affects their taste. The sweetest fruits are usually imported from Spain and Morocco. Tangerines from these countries are easy to peel, juicy, and have a pleasant aroma.
Turkey mainly supplies tangerines with a slight sour aftertaste – they are cheaper, but less tasty. So, before buying the most affordable option, carefully read the label.
Color: Choose brightness
A bright orange hue is an indicator of ripeness. Pale or greenish fruit usually means it’s not ripe, so the taste may not please you.
Weight: Lightness or heaviness
Take the tangerine in your hand. If it is light, this may indicate that there is not enough juice inside. A heavy tangerine, despite its size, promises juiciness.
Skin texture: Softness matters
The best tangerine has a firm but pleasant skin. If the skin is hard or separates from the flesh, it is most likely empty inside. Such a tangerine will dry out quickly and lose its sweet taste.
Secret sign: the “heel” of a tangerine
Not everyone pays attention to this, but the place where the fruit connects to the branch can tell a lot about the freshness of the fruit.
A light or white attachment point indicates freshness – the fruit was recently picked, therefore, it is juicy and sweet.
A brown or darker spot signals that the tangerine may be overripe or starting to spoil.
If you are lucky enough to buy sour tangerines, do not be upset: there are ways to fix the situation and enjoy delicious citrus easily.
Let’s also remember recent news: the curfew for the New Year has been lifted – will restrictions for Ukrainians be reduced for the holidays?
