Як батькам розпізнати приховані емоційні сигнали підлітків, коли вони кажуть "У мене все добре

How parents can recognize hidden emotional signals from teenagers when they say “I’m fine”

Adolescence is full of a variety of internal experiences, often hidden behind the phrase: “I’m fine.” These words can be a sign of stress, loneliness, or insecurity, because adolescents usually lack the opportunity to express their emotions openly.

Parents should address this barrier by fostering a culture of trust and accepting emotions as an integral part of life. It is important to notice any changes in behavior that may indicate the child’s internal experiences.

Many parents face a situation in which a teenager hastily declares that everything is fine, trying to reassure them. However, in reality, this may be a mask for emotional chaos, stress, or even panic. Adolescence is full of emotional trials, and not all teenagers know how to cope with these feelings. They may avoid open communication, be immersed in gadgets, or withdraw from others, trying to hide their vulnerability. However, a lack of openness may indicate a need for support.

Silence is not always a sign of strength. Often, teenagers get used to suppressing their emotions, believing that their expression is a sign of weakness. This accumulated tension can lead to physical and psychological exhaustion, manifesting itself in irritability or aggression. Sometimes silence can serve as a powerful signal that they need help.

Emotions can be recognized even without words. Changes in behavior are peculiar signals: sleep disturbances, lack of interest in hobbies, distancing from loved ones or friends. Some teenagers will try to compensate for their insecurity by becoming overly perfectionistic, while others will withdraw. This is not rebellion, but a way to protect an overloaded mind.

Sometimes it is essential to communicate without pressure. Trying to lure an honest conversation can have the opposite effect. Instead, parents can create an atmosphere of trust through simple everyday moments, such as walking or driving together or doing household chores. A gentle invitation to share thoughts can open the way for dialogue.

It is essential to demonstrate by example that emotions are normal and cannot be divided into “good” or “bad”. When parents openly accept their feelings, adolescents receive the message that their sadness or fear is a natural reaction. By supporting children in finding the words to express their emotions, parents help develop their emotional intelligence and resilience in difficult situations.

If you notice worrying indicators such as excessive withdrawal, self-harm, or persistent mood swings, it is essential to seek professional help. Therapy can be a valuable resource for support, marking a positive step in teaching children to take care of their psycho-emotional health.
