Furniture, neighbors and safes: where is the best place to hide spare house keys?
A spare key can be a lifesaver in an emergency, but if it is not hidden correctly, it can become easily accessible to intruders.
When providing yourself with a spare key, it is essential to consider not only where to store it but also to avoid specific not-so-good options, as Martha Stewart mentioned.
Few people are unfamiliar with the situation of a locked door and keys left inside, or with needing to leave the house under another person’s supervision. A spare key will undoubtedly come in handy, but only if its location is carefully chosen.
Several places may seem convenient, but are actually dangerous. Under the doormat in front of the door is the first place that potential thieves check. Nor is the mailbox reliable, as it is easy to reach. Fake stones have lost their surprise, and decorative elements near the entrance, such as pots with plants and lamps, have already become classic ways to store keys. You should also avoid options such as door or window frames, as these tricks are well-known.
It is much safer to choose options known only to a specific person. The most convenient way is to leave the key with your trusted neighbor, friend, or relative. This is not only convenient, but also practical. Another option may be to use a key safe with a combination lock, but it is better to place it away from the entrance.
You can also hide keys in inconspicuous places – under heavy garden furniture, in a fake electrical outlet, in a drainpipe or ventilation grille, if the key is securely fixed there. Some hide keys under a dog kennel or behind a weak brick in the garden fence – this can look natural and not attract attention.
