Europe plans security mission for Ukraine: partners consider deploying up to 30,000 peacekeepers
Amid discussions of possible peace agreements, Ukraine’s European partners have begun taking practical steps. Thus, during the summit of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris, a plan was presented to deploy a foreign military contingent into Ukraine.
According to information published in the French edition of Le Monde, Ukraine’s key allies are working on the concept of deploying peacekeeping forces as part of objective measures to ensure security. France, Great Britain, and Turkey actively support the initiative.
According to preliminary data, the mission may involve 15-20 thousand military personnel. If the situation worsens, the number of peacekeepers could increase to 30,000.
The ground contingent is planned to be formed from units of France and Great Britain. Turkey will play an essential role in ensuring the security of sea routes, in particular in the Black Sea.
Geographically, the focus will be on western Ukraine, as these regions are considered relatively safe for the deployment of international forces.
In particular, the United States does not plan to send its military units, but can provide significant support in other aspects, especially in logistics and intelligence.
In addition to the military deployment, the allies intend to conclude legally binding agreements. According to Reuters, the draft declaration of the “coalition of the willing” proposes establishing a system of political and legal security guarantees for Ukraine.
The document aims to clearly outline actions in the event of a new armed attack by Russia. Possible measures include the use of military capabilities, increased intelligence and logistical support, and the introduction of new sanctions.
It is also known that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed essential aspects of security guarantees with the United States after he met with Donald Trump, including economic support and ways to resolve the conflict peacefully.
