Went to check on the conflict: Polish citizen died in a Russian prison
Polish media reports on the tragic death of Krzysztof Halos, a Polish citizen who was detained by the Russians in the occupied territory of Ukraine in 2023. According to human rights activists, the man died in a detention center in Taganrog.
Krzysztof Halos, a resident of Krakow, disappeared in the spring of 2023 after a sudden trip to Ukraine. His family said that he did not warn about his intentions and only mentioned a two-week vacation. The last contact with his son was via SMS: “I can’t answer. Everything is fine. I love you.”
After his disappearance, the family contacted the police, who established that Halos entered Ukraine on April 20, 2023, in his own car, with a bicycle in the cabin. Surveillance video showed his car near a power plant in the Zaporizhia region.
According to the Russian human rights group Memorial, Galos accidentally came across a Russian military checkpoint in the occupied territory, where he was detained and taken to the Taganrog pre-trial detention center. There are suggestions that his death may have been the result of torture.
Having received no information about Galos’s detention and death, Polish diplomats have not yet been informed of the situation. His relatives claim that he had no ties to Ukraine and for a long time ignored the fact of the war, which was probably due to depression from which he had suffered for several years.
