Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Greece extended until March 2027

Ukrainian citizens who have received temporary protection in Greece can legally stay in the country for at least another year. This was made possible by the decision of the Minister of Migration and Asylum of the Hellenic Republic, Athanasios Plevris.

The validity period of temporary protection for persons displaced from Ukraine has been extended until March 4, 2027, according to the Embassy of Ukraine in Greece, citing the Minister’s decision dated January 9, 2026.

Thus, Ukrainians who have received temporary protection status after the outbreak of the war can continue to legally reside in Greece and enjoy the right to reside, work, receive medical care, education, and social services. To extend the status, it is not necessary to submit a new application unless the Greek authorities provide separate instructions.

The Embassy of Ukraine emphasizes that this decision is in line with the pan-European policy of supporting Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes due to the conflict. Greece, like other EU countries, adheres to the European Union Directive on Temporary Protection.

Citizens of Ukraine are advised to monitor news from the Greek migration authorities closely and, if necessary, update their documents promptly. It is also recommended to contact diplomatic institutions for legal or administrative issues.

It is also reported that the Czech Republic may revise the rules on temporary protection for Ukrainians traveling to Ukraine, potentially leading to restrictions on payments and benefits for such refugees.
