Експерти попереджають про ризики для здоров'я: чому зимове зберігання їжі на балконі небезпечне

Experts warn of health risks: why storing food on the balcony in winter is dangerous

Winter often prompts people to use their balconies or terraces as additional storage for food, especially during the holidays when there is not enough space in the house. Michigan State University reports this.

The balcony “refrigerator” can hold pies, salads, and even pots of soup, but experts warn that temperatures above +4 °C provide optimal conditions for bacterial reproduction. To preserve perishable products, it is necessary to maintain a temperature regime of 0 to +4 °C, similar to a refrigerator.

Let’s say that food can freeze at night and begin to thaw during the day. These temperature fluctuations create ideal conditions for the growth of harmful microorganisms, such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus.

Not only bacteria – another threat

Nutrition expert Katarzyna Bosacka emphasizes the “live factor”. Products left on the balcony under a cover can become a target for birds and pets.

She notes that crows, magpies, cats, and even dogs often feast on holiday dishes left unattended. There are cases when a pet ate half of a Christmas dessert left on the terrace.

When you can store food on the balcony

Experts allow only one exception: cooling soups or broths. Such food can be left on the balcony for no more than 2-3 hours, provided it has cooled to a warm temperature. It is dangerous to take out hot food, as it can promote bacterial growth.

It is not recommended to leave salads with mayonnaise, creamy desserts, meat products, cheeses, or sausages on the balcony, even in frosty weather.

Risks with warming

Experts emphasize that with warming, relying on the weather becomes increasingly dangerous. The balcony cannot serve as a refrigerator, increasing the risk of food poisoning.

The best option remains storing food in a refrigerator or freezer with constant temperature control. Experts advise using the balcony only in exceptional cases, and to always carefully follow the storage terms and conditions to avoid health hazards.
