Generators for every home: an expert tells how to deal with blackouts in the capital

In Kyiv, a decision was made to accelerate repairs to energy facilities to increase electricity production. Local authorities are trying to prepare the city for the cold and possible repeated attacks from Russia. However, these measures, unfortunately, do not provide reliable protection against significant power outages.

The director of energy programs of the Psyche Center, Gennady Ryabtsev, gave this assessment. In his opinion, short-term warming should not be misleading: already next weekend in Ukraine, we should expect severe frosts again, with temperatures down to -25 degrees. In such conditions, the emergence of new damage to the power system can lead to serious consequences.

The expert emphasizes that Kyiv urgently needs practical solutions, in particular, the installation of autonomous generators in homes where life-support systems have suffered the most. “Each such dwelling should be equipped with a separate generator. This should not be just a backup option, but a full-fledged autonomous source of electricity – diesel or gasoline. Unfortunately, there are no alternatives at the moment. This matter needs to be resolved immediately,” Ryabtsev emphasized.

Therefore, he is skeptical about the potential for a quick solution to the problem through cogeneration plants, because it is unclear where to obtain the required number of such plants within a limited time. Instead, the expert suggests focusing on expanding distributed generation – small power plants that can be quickly connected to the general network.

“We need to maximally stimulate the connection of small power plants that have already been put into operation. Guaranteed distributed generation is what we need, not waiting for complex solutions that may not be in time,” he concluded.
