Numbness in hands while sleeping may be a sign of a serious illness
Many people notice numbness in their hands after sleeping, often due to an awkward posture. If this sensation occurs regularly, doctors advise consulting a specialist, as it can be a symptom of a more serious problem, according to a sleep specialist.
In addition to uncomfortable sleep, numbness can result from carpal tunnel syndrome, which is caused by compression of the median nerve in the hand. This condition most often affects office workers, who experience numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
People whose jobs involve frequent hand movements or physical exertion are also at risk. Nerve damage can lead to pain, tingling, and numbness, especially at night—a condition known as “working hand syndrome.”
Dangerous causes of numbness
One serious cause can be cervical spondylosis—a chronic disease that affects the intervertebral discs, muscles, and ligaments, and is most common in older people. It is accompanied by neck stiffness and pain in the shoulders, arms, and fingers, with numbness.
Thoracic outlet syndrome, which occurs when vessels and nerves in the upper chest are compressed, can also cause such sensations. Injuries, poor posture, repetitive movements, or the presence of an extra cervical rib can cause this disease. The syndrome is most often found in women.
People who have diabetes, chronic inflammation, or a hereditary predisposition may experience peripheral neuropathy—nerve damage that also causes numbness and weakness.
Recommendations from a somnologist
Choose orthopedic mattresses and pillows that adequately support the neck and spine.
Do not put your hands under the pillow and try not to bend your wrists while sleeping. It is better to keep your arms at your sides when sleeping on your back.
Do light hand and wrist exercises before bed to prevent numbness.
If you wake up with numbness that spreads and is accompanied by weakness, dizziness, or discomfort, this is a good reason to consult a doctor. In some cases, the cause may be an old pillow that no longer performs its functions.
Currently, experts are also warning about possible outbreaks of influenza and COVID-19, urging the population to take precautions to protect themselves and not endanger others.
