Why Ukraine persistently demands the ratification of the agreement in Congress: an expert’s comment about Trump and Putin

According to the expert, Trump is trying to explain to Putin that, although he understands Putin’s position, Congress will not support any agreement that would be disadvantageous to Ukraine. As part of this strategy, legal ratification of the agreement by the US Congress is key for the Ukrainian side. This is necessary so that the partnership between Trump and Putin does not lead to a quick agreement on terms that would harm Ukraine.

Expert Ruslan Bortnyk emphasized that Trump and Putin are quite close in their vision, so Ukraine should ensure that any agreement that requires serious concessions on its part is not approved. After all, the possibility of passing such an agreement in Congress is complicated by the division of votes: Democrats have their views, and Republicans are divided into traditional and MAGA.

Bortnyk also noted that without Congress’s participation, it is difficult to achieve significant changes, especially on sanctions. He emphasizes that Trump is ready to sign a deal with Putin, but he is aware that any deal that harms Ukraine will not pass through a controlled parliament.

In his comments, the expert assumes that even if Trump is ready to make compromises, the agreement will have to go through a complex political process in the United States.
