Reasons for blocking a card by a bank abroad and actions to take in this situation
Ukrainians who have emigrated abroad often face problems when their bank cards suddenly stop working. The main reasons for such blockings and ways to quickly resolve them are discussed in the analytical material.
There are four main reasons for blocking a card.
Unexpected departure abroad and combating fraud
This is the most common reason. If you are used to shopping in your hometown, say, Odessa, and suddenly your card is used in Munich or Warsaw, the bank may perceive such transactions as potential fraudulent activity. In this case, the card is blocked until you confirm through personal verification that it is you who are abroad and using the account.
Unpaid debts or lawsuits
This is a more serious reason. Perhaps you have forgotten about some debts, such as fines or utility bills. The enforcement service can seize your funds in banks by court order. Even a small debt of 200 hryvnias can lead to the blocking of a card with a much larger amount.
Financial monitoring
Banks are required to monitor suspicious transactions, especially those exceeding large amounts. For example, if a large amount of money is transferred to your account, the bank may suspend access to these funds to verify their origin. This is part of security and anti-money laundering efforts.
Entering the PIN incorrectly three times
ATMs abroad may be unusual or difficult to use. If you enter the PIN incorrectly three times, your card will automatically be blocked for security reasons.
How to solve the problem
If your card is blocked, use the following steps to quickly resolve the situation:
Connect to the Internet. Find stable access to the network. If mobile roaming is not available, try free Wi-Fi in a cafe or public places.
Check your banking app. Log in to your bank’s mobile app. There is often a notification there with the reasons for the blocking, for example, a requirement to confirm the action or indicate your location. If the PIN code is entered incorrectly, you can change it in the settings.
Contact support. If the problem cannot be resolved through the app, use free channels for communicating with the bank, such as official chatbots or Internet calling functions. Be prepared to undergo identity verification by providing personal information.
In case of arrest due to debts. If the reason for the blocking is enforcement proceedings or debt, you should contact the bailiff or the relevant state body in Ukraine to lift the arrest or repay the debt.
Any blocking of the card is a measure aimed at your safety or compliance with the law. Therefore, it is recommended to inform your bank of your plan before traveling abroad, regularly check your finances, and pay off your debts. This will help avoid unforeseen situations and ensure access to your account.
