Restoring energy and accelerating recovery: which products will help with a cold
Many people still believe that you should eat when you have a cold and fast when you have a fever.
However, modern research confirms that the body needs food, fluids and rest during the illness, not fasting, as reported by The Washington Post.
Doctors note that during infections, the body spends a lot of energy fighting viruses and bacteria. Therefore, it is important to provide the body with calories, proteins and essential trace elements. Prolonged fasting can delay recovery from illness, because even light food helps to return to normal faster.
During illness, many people notice a decrease in appetite – this is a normal reaction of the body. The immune system releases substances that “switch” the body to fight the infection, rather than searching for food. Therefore, the feeling of hunger may temporarily disappear. If you have no appetite, you should not force yourself to eat, but it is important to at least partially support the body with nutritious foods.
The main rule during a cold or fever is to drink enough fluids. Since the body can quickly lose water through sweating, vomiting or diarrhea, doctors recommend drinking water, warm herbal teas or broths more often. Drinks with electrolytes also help restore the body’s water balance.
Meals should be light and nutritious. Soups, vegetables, fruits or smoothies will provide the body with vitamins and antioxidants, while it is better to avoid heavy and highly processed foods.
Rest is also important. During sleep, the body spends more resources on fighting infection. A warm shower or bath can make you feel better – the steam helps you breathe easier and reduces muscle pain.
Zinc and honey can also be useful during illness. Zinc can shorten the duration of a cold by about one to two days, and honey in a warm drink soothes the throat and relieves coughing.
Doctors emphasize that vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect against influenza and COVID-19. In case of bacterial infections, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics, and for viral diseases – special antiviral drugs.
Do not forget that news materials are not a substitute for medical advice. Before making any decisions, it is recommended to consult a specialist.
