Masks have robbed children of smiles: study reveals unexpected impact of pandemic on toddlers

Scientists remind us that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt, especially in children. Although we have become accustomed to perceiving COVID-19 as a thing of the past, new research shows that its impact is not over.

According to a study by Utrecht University, led by Carlin van den Boomen, children who grew up during the pandemic are worse at recognizing emotions on the faces of others. At a critical time for their development, they had limited contact with people, most of whom were wearing masks. During this period, children learn to understand emotions, and the pandemic disrupted this process.

As part of the study, scientists observed about a thousand children, half of whom grew up before the pandemic, and the other half during it. The results were alarming: children who survived the pandemic showed significantly greater difficulty recognizing emotions such as joy and fear. Even more disturbing is that the response to happy faces has diminished, as if pleasure no longer has a place in their perception of the world.

Brain scans have also shown that children from the pandemic period react differently to emotions, which suggests more profound consequences for their mental development.

Recognizing emotions is not just a helpful skill but the basis for regular communication and relationships. The ability to understand the feelings of others is essential for social adaptation and learning in a team. Without such skills, children will miss out on some crucial life lessons.

Carlin van den Boomen emphasizes that health measures must consider not only physical protection but also the long-term consequences for children’s development. Toddlers are particularly vulnerable to such “invisible” losses.

Despite this, scientists have reason for optimism. Previous studies have shown that children usually try to catch up over time. However, experts warn that we should not underestimate the depth and breadth of the pandemic’s consequences, which may prove more serious than expected.
