Quality is declining, and this affects prices: how the cost of onions, carrots and garlic has changed
Ukraine has experienced a notable decline in onion prices. At the same time, prices for other popular vegetables, such as carrots and garlic, are rising. The EastFruit project and the Ministry of Finance portal provide this information.
Farmers in Ukraine have started selling onions at prices ranging from 16 to 26 hryvnias per kilogram. A week ago, the cost of onions was not lower than 18 hryvnias per kilogram. Thus, the price decreased by an average of 12% per week.
The reason for the price decline is the deterioration of the quality of onions remaining in warehouses. The number of refusals to purchase products that do not meet standards is increasing, prompting farmers to lower their prices.
Experts note: “The reduction in prices at the end of the season is a forced step. This is caused by a surplus of low-quality products on the market.”
The price of onions is currently 12% lower than it was during the same period last year. A further decline in prices is possible as the quality of vegetables stored in warehouses deteriorates, and demand remains limited.
Carrot and garlic prices
The average price of carrots in supermarkets has increased from 42.74 to 59.05 hryvnia per kilogram, while young carrots cost about 75.50 hryvnia per kilo.
As for garlic, the average cost is 181 hryvnia per kilogram, which is 7 hryvnia more than a month ago. At the same time, young products are sold for 117.80 hryvnia per kilogram.
It was previously reported that prices remained stable: affordable meat is becoming more expensive in Ukraine. Experts also predict that low prices for berries will not last long and reported a rapid increase in prices for beets, cabbage, and potatoes.
