Passport changes for Ukrainians: innovations and updates

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 13369, which is subject to changes in passport documentation, including passports for traveling abroad. Two hundred sixty-five deputies voted for this initiative, the broadcast of the plenary session reports.

According to the document, all entries in a book-format passport should now be made exclusively in Ukrainian. Previously, passport information was also duplicated in Russian. This decision cancels the 1992 regulation on international passports, as it no longer meets modern legislative requirements.

Since 2016, Ukrainians have received passports only in ID-card format. The last old-style book-format passports were issued in 2014. However, in some cases, if the court decides, citizens may receive passport books. All such documents must also contain entries in Ukrainian only. The old-style passport will remain valid for those who already have it.

In addition, the Ukrainian government has approved a resolution prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that determines the conditions for foreign countries to introduce a simplified procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship. This innovation will allow ethnic Ukrainians who are citizens of other countries to get a Ukrainian passport without renouncing their second citizenship. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that this decision will help hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians around the world restore ties with their homeland.
