Водохреща 2026 року: українцям озвучили нову дату свята замість 19 січня та основні заборони

Epiphany 2026: Ukrainians were informed of the new date of the holiday instead of January 19 and the main prohibitions

In 2026, confusion will again arise in Ukraine with the dates of church holidays. Epiphany, which was traditionally celebrated on January 19, will now be celebrated on a different day due to the transition to a new church calendar.

Let’s consider when exactly Ukrainians will celebrate Epiphany in 2026, whether a day off will be taken, and what actions should be avoided on this day.

When is Epiphany celebrated in 2026

Jesus Christ was baptized in the Jordan River at the age of 30 by John the Baptist. Since the exact date of this event is unknown, the holiday is determined conditionally based on historical traditions.

For many years, this holiday was celebrated in Ukraine on January 19. However, after the calendar reform that began in 2023, church holidays were moved back 13 days. According to the new calendar, Epiphany in 2026 will be celebrated on January 6, when services and the consecration of water will be held in the churches of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

It is worth noting that some believers adhere to the old style, so some communities may also celebrate this holiday on January 19.

Will there be a day off on Epiphany?

Despite the holiday’s importance, Epiphany is not a public holiday, so no day off is provided. In 2026, January 6 falls on Tuesday, and January 19 on Monday, but neither date provides for additional rest.

How to celebrate Epiphany correctly

Before the holiday, Epiphany Eve is celebrated – January 5 according to the new calendar or January 18 according to the old. This is a day of fasting, when believers observe restraint in eating, and traditional lean dishes are served.

The main sign of Epiphany is consecrated water, purified in temples, springs, wells, and rivers. People usually bring this water home and store it for a year to use if necessary. Previously, family and pets were sprinkled with water in the morning.

Swimming in a hole has become a modern tradition, but it is an unconditional rite with little historical depth. Doctors emphasize the dangers of swimming without proper preparation or in untested places.

What not to do on Epiphany

On the holiday, the church calls for avoiding quarrels, insults, obscene language, and alcohol abuse. Work is not prohibited, but it is recommended to refrain from heavy household chores.

Those who plan to swim in bodies of water are advised to follow safety rules and not enter the water in untested areas or if they have medical contraindications.
