January will bring frosts for Ukrainians: forecast for the rest of the month

Prepare for frosts in January, especially in the northern and eastern regions of Ukraine, where the cold will be especially noticeable. The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center provided this information.

The average temperature in January is expected to range from -1° to -7°, approximately 1.5° below the climatic norm for this time of year. As for precipitation, during the month, it will be 28-79 mm, corresponding to 80-100% of the annual average.

According to forecasts by Vira Balabukh, head of the department of applied meteorology and climatology at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, January is usually the coldest month of winter. In the south of Ukraine, temperatures can reach 1-2° Celsius, while in the northern and northeastern regions they can drop to -3° and even lower.

Balabukh also noted that in January, the probability of Arctic cold increases, which is typical for this period. Similar weather conditions are expected in February.

Although January frosts may be severe, the winter of 2025-2026 is predicted to have an average temperature 3-4 degrees above normal. This is explained by an abnormally warm December that almost matched November’s temperatures.

Earlier, it was reported on the serious consequences of the most dangerous winter pastime for children, as well as on the likelihood that snow will become a rarity amid an abnormally warm winter. In addition, Ukrainians in January expect a series of magnetic storms, which will also affect weather conditions.
