Church services during curfew: restrictions on Easter and memorial days

In 2026, Easter in Ukraine will not be celebrated in the usual holiday atmosphere, but in conditions of war and increased security measures. Restrictions have been introduced in various regions, the format of church services has been changed, and additional transport flights have been organized.

The celebration of the Resurrection of Christ imposes special rules related to security. This year, Catholics will celebrate Easter on April 5, and Orthodox Christians on April 12. Due to constant shelling, threats of mines, and possible provocations, local authorities are introducing a number of bans and tightening control.

The situation in the Kharkiv region remains difficult. In Kharkiv, access to several cemeteries is closed, in particular to No. 13, 15, and 17, due to the threat of drone attacks. Some cemeteries are still functioning, but visiting burial sites is prohibited in all territories near the border with Russia. At the same time, the authorities are dealing with issues of demining and preventing forest fires.

In the Donetsk region, the restrictions are much stricter. In Druzhkivka, shelling of religious sites was noted, so mass celebrations are prohibited. The curfew will last from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. Residents are asked to refrain from visiting churches for their own safety.

In the Kherson region, many religious buildings were destroyed as a result of attacks. Religious communities are calling not to hold services at night during the curfew. It is advisable to organize the consecration of Easter baskets on the streets without crowds. Visiting cemeteries is limited, only funeral procedures are allowed due to the threat of mines.

The Kyiv region also calls for refraining from mass events, including fairs and concerts. The curfew on the night of the celebration will remain from midnight to five in the morning, and only clergy will be able to visit churches.

In the Vinnytsia region, strict restrictions have been imposed on holding mass religious events outside churches until the end of November 2026. The blessing of Easter baskets will take place during the day.

Security measures have been tightened in Mykolaiv and the region, residents are asked to actively respond to alarm signals. Religious ceremonies are also recommended to be held without gatherings of people. In Kropyvnytskyi, the possibility of changing the curfew for Easter is being considered, and transport on the holiday will run early in the morning.

Overall, the celebration of Easter in Ukraine in 2026 will be focused on safety. The authorities call on citizens to exercise caution, avoid gatherings and adhere to the established restrictions.
